Man arrested after 11-year-old girl found strangled
A man by the name of Nelson Ndimande (38) has been arrested in connection with the murder of an 11-year-old girl that occurred in Mdlalose Street in Thokoza on February 15.
The communications officer at Thokoza Police Station, Capt Buyisile Mvelase, said the arrest took place on the same day.
According to Mvelase, the suspect allegedly went to the house where he was staying with his ex-girlfriend and her two daughters in Mdlalose Street, Thokoza Extension Two. Finding the two girls, aged eight and 11, on their own at the house, he asked them about the whereabouts of their mother.
“He then took the 11-year-old to the toilet, where he strangled her and left her unconscious,” Mvelase said.
While waiting for the mother to return from work, the man fell asleep.
“When she arrived at about 9pm, the eight-year-old told her mother what happened. Then the mother went out to ask for help.”
Mvelase said members of the community made sure the man did not escape while the police were called to the scene. “When the police arrived the body of the 11-year-old girl was found inside the toilet. She was rushed to a nearby clinic where she was certified dead.”
She said the suspect was arrested at the scene, and appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on February 19.
“The case was postponed for a bail hearing. He will appear again in court on February 26.”
Mvelase said the suspect is a Mozambican national. “The police are investigating whether the suspect is here legally,” she added.
