“The men were apprehended by the store’s security guard before being handed over to police,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The first man was nabbed after he attempted to steal cans of pilchards and the second when he attempted to leave the store without paying for several tins of shoe polish.

“Both men were handed over to the police without any injuries, and thanks go to the security guard at the shop for not taking the law into his own hands.

“We hope that other members of the community can learn from his example and allow the law to take its course,” said Maome.

Both men have appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where their cases were postponed for plea and trial.
