EHC responds to Pharoe Park residents protest
Pharoe Park residents march on the Germiston Civic Centre on Thursday to deliver a memorandum detailing their demands.
The Ekurhuleni Housing Company (EHC) has responded to demands made during a protest by Pharoe Park.
Residents of the housing project located on the outskirts of the Germiston CBD, marched through the streets of the city on Thursday in protest against poor service delivery and what they deem the exploitation of low-income households.

EHC explaining that it, as an entity of the metro, was mandated to deal with the rental and social housing stock.
They further explained that the income threshold for people occupying these units at Pharoe Park ranges from R3 500 to R15 000.
“One of the basic conditions of occupying units is that you should have a monthly income and a confirmation letter of employment is requested when applying and ITC checks are done on all applications,” said Dumisani Dlamini, acting CEO.
EHC stated that they are aware of the residents’ grievances and that meetings had been held.
“There was a tenants meeting at Pharoe and the tenants’ committee was present and rental issues were discussed.
“The EHC management advised tenants that rent will increase on July 1, as stipulated in their signed lease agreements.
“The rental increase will be 5.5 per cent which is below the CPI and this has been the norm since EHC was established,” said Dlamini.

The tenants’ committee was advised to channel their rental increase issues to their ward councillor who would then discuss their issues with the MMC of Human Settlements.
“The matter is being handled by the metro,” said Dlamini.
The metro is yet to respond to a request for comment.
