Amongst the arrested suspects were two men, aged 27 and 34 years old respectively, who were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The men were arrested at two different hostels, namely the Buyafuthi and Kwesine hostels, by the Soweto K9 Unit.

“The officers received a tip-off that the men responsible for a murder and robbery case opened at the Rantanda Police Station in Heidelberg, were in Katlehong.

“The information led the police to the hostels and the suspects were found and arrested,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong police.

During the arrests, police found a 9mm firearm with its serial number removed and four rounds of ammunition on one of the suspects, while the clothes allegedly worn during the robbery and murder where discovered in the other suspect’s hostel room.

The men were detained at the Katlehong Police Station.

“Police are investigating whether the men can be linked to the Rantanda case, but this is yet to be confirmed,” said Ndobe.

The remaining seven suspects were arrested for various offences including possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of dagga.

All the accused appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where their cases were postponed for various reasons.

The Katlehong police’s acting station commander Col Nomthandeki Mthembu was pleased with the arrests made and applauded the officers, including the members of the Soweto K9 Unit, for their hard work.
