Germiston student is showcasing Brisbane, Australia, to the world
Ambassadors showcase the city as one of the best places in the world to live, study and play.
Brisbane’s luckiest international students have started living the Aussie dream, with 44 new faces being named official Brisbane, Australia, ambassadors.
The ambassadors showcase the city as one of the best places in the world to live, study and play.
Brisbane city council chairperson for finance and economic development Clr Krista Adams said 44 international students from 30 countries were appointed Brisbane’s ambassadors for the next 12 months at a special ceremony.
“Being a Brisbane ambassador is one of the best ways to experience our city, from its cuddly koalas and river adventures to its unique outdoor lifestyle,” Krista said.
“More than 85 000 international students enrol to study in Brisbane each year and this year 44 of those will get to experience some of the city’s thrilling sporting fixtures, red carpet events, native wildlife encounters and island escapes.”
South African student Magdalena Louw from Germiston said she was thrilled to be appointed a Brisbane International Student Ambassador by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk at City Hall.
Magdalena is studying for a diploma in early childhood education and care at Australian Child Care Career Options (ACCCO).
She grew up in Germiston and attended primary school at Colin Mann Primary School, and high school at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston and Leeuwenhof Akademie.
Her family still lives in the city.

“I have been in Brisbane for just under a year and I cannot believe how many amazing memories I have already made.
“Brisbane is such a lively city which provides you with the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, there is always something new and exciting to do and the easy-going lifestyle never ceases to amaze me,” Magdalena said.
“I have grown to love Brisbane’s welcoming and easy-going people.”
Krista said international education was worth $3-billion (approximately R29-b) to Brisbane’s economy, and it was vital that the city continues to be showcased as a world-class place to live and study.
“The task for this year’s ambassadors will be to broadcast their stay in Brisbane to more than 240 000 people through the Study Brisbane Facebook page and their own social media accounts,” she said.
“Sharing Brisbane’s wonderful attractions, lifestyle and events generate increased interest in our city among those from overseas considering international study.”
She added that other duties include helping to profile Brisbane by hosting high school study groups, education agent tours and welcoming work-experience students in Brisbane on exchange.
“The ambassadors will also welcome incoming international students at Brisbane International Airport and team up with the Brisbane Greeters to help orientate new students around their new home.
“Forty of this year’s ambassadors are studying at higher-education institutions, while four are studying at local high schools,” Krista said.
