The GCN approached the metro for comment on the protest and recently received feedback from the metro’s spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.
“The MMC for Environment and Waste Management and the Waste Management Department is aware of the situation, and the MMC, Clr Ndosi Shongwe, has spoken to their representatives.
“The protestors were relief workers who were appointed to assist the metro during the festive season and they worked from December 2017 to February 2018,” he explained.

When asked if their positions would be made permanent Gadebe said, “These workers were appointed as relief workers on a fixed-term contract, and these positions are not part of the approved staff structure.
“Once the process of the organisational restructuring is complete and all vacant funded posts are advertised, the normal recruitment process will give everybody an opportunity to apply.”
