Five arrested following act of mob justice

Katlehong police make 11 arrests during daily operations in their precinct.

Katlehong police took to the streets of Katlehong on Wednesday in several different operations.

During the operations, conducted by members of the Katlehong police’s Crime Prevention Unit and detectives from the Katlehong Police Station, 11 suspects were arrested for various offences including five for mob justice and murder.

The five accused, aged between 22 and 46 years old, were charged with murder after they allegedly beat a man, who died later in hospital, during an alleged act of mob justice, in Silumaview.

“The men were arrested after detectives received information on the whereabouts of some of the accused allegedly involved in the murder,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, Katlehong corporate communications official.

“Police are expecting to make more arrests in this case.”

Katlehong SAPS acting station commander Christinah Gcaza sent a stern warning to the Katlehong community not to take the law into their own hands.

“When suspects are arrested by the community the police must be called to arrest a suspect without any assault.

“It is up to the court to punish the suspect when he or she is found guilty,” Gcaza said.

The remaining six suspects were charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft of a motor vehicle and contravening a court order.

All of the arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed for various reasons.
