Update: Power slowly being restored to affected suburbs as metro switches on new equipment

Metro engineers and technicians continue to work to restore power following an explosion and building collapse at the Elsburg Substation.

Power is slowly being restored to several Germiston suburbs this morning.

This is according to Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer, who visited the Elsburg Substation in Ostend Road this morning (Thursday).

The affected areas, which include, but are not limited to, Delville, Collin Wade, the industrial area of Germiston South, Parkhill Gardens, Tedstoneville, industrial areas fed from Enterprise, and parts of Hazeldene, Germiston South, Elsburg and the Germiston CBD, were plunged into darkness on Tuesday, following an explosion and building collapse at the substation.

“The team on site began switching power back on slowly from 6.30am this morning,” de Beer said.

“The power is being turned on gradually so as not to overload the new equipment and to allow the DC batteries on site time to charge.

“They simply cannot switch everything on at the same time.”

By 8.30am de Beer commented that 45 per cent of the affected areas were back online.

“It is estimated that power will be completely restored today,” de Beer said.

Further details will be released when they become available.
