Missionary work brings smiles to people’s faces
SAVF Kinross Herberg was one of the stops during the Methodist Church’s Mission Week.
Volunteers from the Methodist Church’s Highveld and Swaziland District were out in full force last week doing good deeds in the Germiston community.
The Methodist Church Mission Week sees a different participation circuit being chosen each year.
Rev Barbara Underhill from the Elsburg Methodist Church and her volunteers had an extremely busy week visiting organisations and homes in the community.
One of the places they visited was SAVF Kinross Herberg in Germiston South, last Friday.
At Kinross they and the residents painted the palisade fence and did spring cleaning.
They also donated cleaning products and other items to the organisation.
“We are so grateful for the visit and thank them for what they have done for us,” said Nella Siebert, manager of SAVF Kinross Herberg.
The week saw the volunteers visiting among others, Sasonah Lodge, Elandsvallei Home for the Aged, Prim Villa, Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, Epworth Children’s Village, Ekurhuleni Primary, the Dukathole and Elsburg clinics (where gifts were given to new moms), Care Bear Gauteng Safe House for Abandoned and Abused Babies and Toddlers and Leondale Primary.
Donations were handed over to all the mentioned organisations.
“The volunteers also conducted home visits and gave out food parcels in Dukathole, Buhle Park, Graceland, Leondale, Ramaposa and Rondebult.
“They had enough food parcels to help just over 100 families,” said Rev Barbara.
After a day of work out in the community the group held a service in a different church each night.
The week culminated in a visit to celebrate Epworth Children’s Village’s centenary last Saturday morning, followed by a special lunch at the Germiston Methodist Church and an all-night vigil.
The following morning a celebration service was held and the volunteers went their separate ways.

Rev Barbara added that there is a group of volunteers in England who knit jerseys, booties and beanies for children and these are flown free of charge to South Africa by British Airways.
The items were also handed out to community members during the week.
“Everything we hand out during the week is donated.
“All organisations of the church have contributed in one way or another,” Rev Barbara said.
She added that the church is looking to continue its missionary work with SAVF Kinross Herberg.
