Wining and dining all for a good cause

Elsburg Support Group enjoyed great support from locals at their recent fund-raiser.

The Elsburg Support Group (ESG) hosted their first Gala Dinner Fund-Raiser last Tuesday, in efforts to raise much-needed funds for home-based care equipment.

The dinner was held at Mike’s Kitchen Lambton.

Methodist Church Elsburg members and a number of community members showed their support for the organisation.

“The services we provide are intended for the community and we want more community involvement,” said Florence Matona, founder of ESG.

“Whether it’s in the form of volunteerism or seeking our services because you are in need or your neighbour is, we are here.”

Established in 2011 as a non-profit organisation (NPO) primarily focusing on intervention in the field of the mentally challenged, the support group now focuses on providing sheltered employment and providing home-based care to the needy, old and frail.

“A qualified team of caregivers run our home-based care services, we just desperately need equipment to help us work better.

“Additionally, we work in partnership with families, communities and professionals to offer our clientele the vital services and the support they require,” said Florence.

In efforts to raise funds for home-based care equipment, the Elsburg Support Group took to Mike’s Kitchen for their Gala Dinner Fund-Raiser and gained support from members and a few community members.

The group relies heavily on community projects and funds and has found great help in local councillors and residents.

When a venue was needed, the Elsburg Methodist Church came to their rescue in 2014, offering accommodation to the group, rent-free.

The NPO also seeks to officially establish their sheltered employment centre where those who suffer from mental health illnesses and need regular care can convene and complete work projects under the observation of nursing professionals.

Ester Byrne and Nicolas Courtenay from the Methodist Church Elsburg showed their support for their church mate Florence Matona and the Elsburg Support Group at their Gala Dinner Fund-Raiser.

“We now provide job skills to the community to promote sustainable small businesses and an income to unemployed community members.

“We are working on finding the best location to officially launch our centre,” said Florence.

“These fund-raisers are important because they help us keep afloat and carry out our work efficiently.”

Ending the year with joyous gatherings, the group revealed that they have partnered with a local store to spoil children from Alice Care Centre, based in Graceland, to a fun field trip to the Bokkie Park in Boksburg in the coming weeks.
