Ekurhuleni incubates small business

In an effort to draw the previously marginalised small business into the mainstream economy, the City of Ekurhuleni has established an empowerment programme known as Mintiro ya Vulavula – a tshi-Tsonga expression that means that actions or works speak louder than words.

The programme is scheduled to be rolled out through a series of regional community empowerment roadshows starting from November 27 until December 5. The aim of the roadshow is to help develop business entities and cooperatives owned by the previously disadvantaged groups.

The programme forms part of the city’s 10-point Economic Plan that seeks to help the previously disadvantaged small economic entities to learn and grow economically, and to be competitive enough to participate in the mainstream economy. The roadshows are to help educate and provide local business fraternity with valuable information to enable it to comply with the city’s procurement programmes.

The programme is also to be used as a measure to achieve legislative requirement for preferential procurement system in designated economic sectors that seeks to promote the previously disadvantaged groups.

The city invites members of the community who fall within the category of the designated groups to attend the roadshows in their areas in order to gain prospective contractors’ points for contracting bidding processes. Targeted enterprises and cooperatives for the roadshows are those that are at least 51% owned by:

• black people.

• black people who are youth.

• black women.

• black people living with disabilities.

• black people living in rural or underdeveloped areas or townships.

• a cooperative which is at least 51% owned by black people.

• black people who are military veterans.
