Municipal equipment stolen at depot in Elspark

Elsburg police urge locals to be on the lookout for criminals under the disguise of Ekurhuleni employees.

While doing routine patrols, the security officers on duty at the metro’s South Park depot on Heidelberg Road, alleged to have seen suspicious behaviour on the premises last Thursday.

One officer had just returned from checking on the guard dog with a K9 unit member when he noticed several shadows passing by the guardroom window.

“The guard alleged he called out to his colleague to go check what was going on outside. As they readied themselves to go out and check, the suspects pushed the door to try and gain entry into the guardroom,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.

“The security officers tried to push the door closed to deny access, but the suspects overpowered them and entered the room.”

It is alleged the suspects forcefully took their cellphones and the panic button.

The guards were handcuffed and their legs were tied up with shoelaces.

The suspects managed to get away with municipal equipment such as 10 blue work suits, a brush cutter, chains, oil, a wheel spanner, wheels, lawnmowers and prop shafts.

“Community members are urged to be on the lookout for the suspects who may disguise themselves as employees of the metro in full Ekurhuleni uniform, as well as the Ekurhuleni brand printed on their lawnmowers,” said Phooko.
