Breaking News: R21 closed following shooting

Avoid R21 north bound as highway has been closed off to traffic following a shooting close to Griffiths Road.

The R21 north bound has been closed off to traffic following a shooting near Griffiths Road.

The road closure was confirmed by district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) William Ntladi.

“We are currently on the scene where an alleged heist took place,” Ntladi explained.

“Paramedics attended to two patients, who were allegedly guards inside the targeted vehicle.

“The pair are in critical condition after being shot and were transported to the Life Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni by private ambulance.”

SAPS officers were also on scene, to further investigate the incident.

“The highway is completely closed and we appeal to motorists to avoid the area and use alternative route,” said Ntladi.

Netcare 911 media liaison officer Shawn Herbst confirmed a team responded to the shooting.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two men in a light motor vehicle were shot while travelling on the R21,” he said.

“The patients were assessed on scene by advanced life support paramedics.

“One of the men sustained a gunshot wound to the head and the other was found with gunshot wounds to his upper torso.

“Circumstances leading up to the shooting will be investigated by the SAPS who were on scene.”
