‘Young people do not have to follow the wrong examples’
This letter is addressed to Sonti Mthembu of Katlehong, whose letter was published in the January 16 issue in which she urges leaders to show exemplary leadership to inspire the youth.
Although I do fully agree with her on that, I, however, disagree with her statement that she has decided to no longer get involved in politics. Our lives are politicised at a very young age and as young people, we need to understand the politics of our country.
We cannot remove ourselves from politics because among us there are those who are destined to be leaders tomorrow. So, if the writer says she is removing herself from politics because politicians “speak in forked tongues”, does she not understand that this is what politicians do all over the world?

Young people do not have to follow the wrong examples of our leaders today, but they should instead learn from them and never adopt their “forked-tongue” mentality. But as the leaders of tomorrow, young people should instead to be a lot better than their current leaders.
