SPCA has exciting events lined up for Mandela Day
The Germiston SPCA has a week-long programme of events planned to benefit animals.
In celebration of Mandela Day this year, the Germiston SPCA will hold an exciting week of events.
In the past, the society only did an outreach project at one location, but this year staff are aiming to assist as many owners and animals as possible.
A number of exciting events are planned for the week, namely:
• July 8: Community outreach: Goba Section, Katlehong. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
• July 10: Community outreach: Graceland. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
• July 11: Sterilisation day at the SPCA. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
• July 12: Community outreach: Good Hope informal settlement. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
• July 13: Market and play day at the SPCA from 10am to 3pm. Craft and food stalls, jumping castle and face-painting will be available. Entrance fee is any donation.
• July 14: Fun walk at Germiston Golf Course. The walk is 4km and starts at 3pm. A R10 entry fee will be charged. Restaurant available afterwards. A percentage of your bill will go towards the SPCA.
• July 18: Mandela Day. Volunteers are welcome to visit the SPCA. No membership fee is necessary.
• Community outreach:
Community outreach plays a vital role in preventing animal cruelty.
The policy of the SPCA movement is the promotion of kindness.
Or in other words, to achieve the goal of preventing cruelty to animals by changing attitudes in a positive way.
This is implemented and promoted through humane education.
It is important that educational work is carried out among adults, as well as children in order to promote the understanding, appreciation of and spreading of humane principles.
Education is the key to prevention.

In many cases, the undoubted cruelty, neglect or suffering of an animal has not been the result of a deliberate action by the owner, but the result of ignorance and/or lack of resources.
The SPCA’s role is not only to work with people, to advise, educate and uplift them, but also to work towards changing public opinion towards compassionate attitudes and responsible behaviour towards their animals.
This is not simply referring to pets or domestic animals – but to all animals.
For the outreach projects, the Germiston SPCA would be grateful for any donations of cat and dog food, leashes, bowls and blankets, as they will be using their stock of this to hand out during the outreach activities.
• Sterilisation day:
Together with the state veterinarians from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the SPCA will be doing an outreach sterilisation day at the SPCA’s premises.
The dedicated team will be doing as many sterilisations as possible in the hospital at no cost.
The SPCA advocates for sterilisation.
Some of the advantages of sterilisation include less sexual and territorial aggression, it minimises or eliminates bad behaviour, such as jumping over fences and chasing of cars (in dogs) and minimises the risk of various cancers in animals, etc.
• Market and play day:
This will be the Germiston SPCA’s first market and will be set up in a part of the premises that has been under-utilised for years.
An old engineering storeroom will become the market hall and the yard with beautiful trees will host various food and craft stalls.
For the children there will be a jumping castle and face painter.
The society encourages the community to join them for the day and experience this exciting market.
There will also be access to the kennels for visitors to visit and interact with the animals in the SPCA’s care.
• Fun walk:
The Germiston Golf Club will be hosting the society’s fun walk for 2019.
The 4km route promises to be great fun, along the beautiful golf course.
It’s a relaxed, Sunday-afternoon stroll and entrance is only R10, which will go directly to the SPCA.
The Germiston Golf Club restaurant will be open afterwards for a great meal before the work week starts again.
A percentage of the food bills will also go to the society.
The Germiston SPCA is encouraging the community to get involved and help make a difference in the life of an animal.
They appreciate and value all the care and assistance the SPCA receives from the community.
