Pedestrians left with little room to walk on Main Road pavements

Metro claims the pavements and stormwater drains in Main Road, Fishers’ Hill, will be repaired.

Since beginning her duties as a ward councillor Wendy Morgan (Ward 36 councillor) has been fighting to address the deteriorating state of Main Road’s pavements and stormwater drains.

Morgan recently took the GCN on a site visit of the street.

“The pavement is littered with large holes while the stormwater drains are either open or lie in ruin,” said Morgan.

The GCN sent a query to the metro to find out if plans are in place to fix the pavements and stormwater drains.

“Maintenance of the stormwater systems and walkways is an ongoing daily activity as infrastructure is continually being damaged on a daily basis by external factors like traffic and trenching by service providers,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.

“The road in question will be repaired in the coming weeks, not later than August.”

When asked if the metro could be held liable if someone were to fall into the open holes on the pavement as they are not marked Gadebe said, “Whenever there is a public liability claim, an investigation is conducted to make a determination.”
