Local students make a difference in the lives of animals

The Design@50 team showed their support for the Alberton SPCA during Mandela Month.

In celebration of Mandela Month, the students and facilitators of Design@50 Commercial Jewellery Design Centre, based at Rand Refinery precinct, showed their support for the Alberton SPCA.

The Design@50 team sponsored a kennel at the SPCA for a year, which will provide food, shelter and primary health care to animals in need.

Determined to make even more of a difference in the lives of animals in need, the team hosted a fund-raising boot camp event at Movement Crew Crossfit in Alberton recently.

The students and facilitators of Design@50 Commercial Jewellery Design Centre raised funds for the Alberton SPCA, for Mandela Month, with a boot camp event at Movement Crew Crossfit.

Individuals and businesses were invited to support the event by making contributions to the SPCA.

The additional funds, raised by students, allowed the team to donate much-needed dry pet food to the SPCA.

“Our Mandela Month fund-raiser created a strong sense of community and proved to be so much more than just raising money for a good cause,” said Edna de Bruyn, project head.

“The enthusiasm and energy generated by the students during the event created a sense of belonging, of supporting each other and a sense of pride from working together to make a difference.

“In true Mandela spirit, the Design@50 students stood up and made an impact.”

Omphile Sibanda (a student) said after the event, “This was a fun project full of activity.

“It is amazing that everybody has the power to change the world they live in and to make an impact by helping in any way they can.”

Another student, Isabel Bothma, commented, “We spent time at the SPCA playing with the animals.

“We wish we could have done more, but the little we could offer made a difference to the SPCA.

“They were delighted by our contribution.”

Zoea Alberts (a student) said, “Raising funds for the SPCA for Mandela Month was such a positive experience for all of us.

“The boot camp was very challenging, but we had a lot of fun.

“The highlight of the event was definitely taking the donations to the SPCA and spending time with the animals.”
