School for visually impaired gets R30 000 cheque
The chief marketing officer of Fundi, Mala Suriah, presented the Sibonile School for the Visually Impaired with a cheque for R30 000 on July 18.
The funds will be used to upgrade the Kliprivier-based school’s braille machines and to also improve the learning experience.
Fundi specialises in education finance and education fund management.
Learners, teachers, and parents at the school, were delighted for the gift.

The funding was sourced by Jicama 89, a registered NPO whose function is to help to resource underprivileged and needy organisations.
Suriah said: “As a brand that understands the uniqueness of education journeys, we wanted to find a meaningful way to assist the learners on their way towards success. Helping the school to purchase additional Tetrapoint braillers was an ideal initiative to support the learners and the school. The results will have a real impact on learning,” Suriah said.
Established in 1995 by Bafedi Moruthani, the school has grown to accommodate 189 partially sighted, totally blind or deaf and blind learners. The learners stay at school.
Jicama 89 has been supporting the school since 2007 when it first helped to build a girls’ hostel. It has since been involved in a variety of projects, including providing specialised teaching equipment, uniforms and food, and improving accommodation and classrooms.

Jicama 89 project director Riccardo Fantoni said the long-term project was to upgrade the school’s Conventional braille machines to the more technically advanced Apex braille note-taking system and Tetrapoint braille system was a priority.
“These systems have a positive educational impact on the learners and enhance their learning experience. Without donations from corporates such as Fundi, it would be a near-impossible task to continue with this project,” said Fantoni.
