Following their passion for performing

Amateur drama group is ready for its big break.

Their love for drama, having hope and the belief that they will soon get their big break is what keeps the members of Rozary Productions going.

The amateur drama group from Dukathole was founded in 2003 and consists of 10 members, some of which are still at school, while others are already in the working world.

The group focuses on stage plays and short films and to date have already made nine short films.

The GCN chatted to three of the leaders of the group on Thursday, namely Cornelius Leeuw, Mary Mokoena and Happy Ramothata.

Happy Ramothata and Mary Mokoena in a scene from one of Rozary Productions’ plays.

The fourth leader, Sibonelo Xaba, could not be present.

The youngsters are extremely passionate about their craft and told the GCN that through a love of reading and writing they are able to create their productions.

Happy, who writes and directs the productions, said, “Reading is extremely important for people.

“If you can’t read, you won’t be able to learn anything.”

Cornelius, the dance director and production manager, echoed his sentiments and Mary, who is an actress and dancer, said, “You will be able to take advantage of more opportunities in life if you know how to read.”

Mary added that when she receives her lines for new productions, she now only has to read over them about three times before they are committed to memory.

Happy said it takes him about two to three weeks to write a script and that almost every month the group will perform a new production for the community.

There is always a message behind their plays.

For example, their latest offering, Abonja Ndini, is about putting an end to crime, which they feel is extremely relevant and pertinent to their community.

“Drama is life, so when I see someone doing something I write it down and turn it into a play,” said Happy.

Cornelius, who has been dancing since 1998, then puts dance moves to each production.

Every year the group holds auditions in Dukathole, Germiston Extension Nine and Germiston Extension Five to find new members.

The group is looking for a career break and further opportunities.

They have the following advice for youngsters who want to become involved in the world of drama.

“You need to go and fetch your dream and then follow it,” Happy said.

“Go for your goals.”

Mary said, “Never give up, and work towards what you want.”

The group works with no budget and sometimes it is difficult for them to get to places to perform. They also do not have all the necessary equipment they need, for example, cameras.

“Sometimes all we can do is walk to where we need to be,” said Cornelius.

They are also looking for a professional who could give them advice on how to apply for funding for the group.

To find out more information about the group, or to offer your assistance with advice or funding, call Cornelius on 074 676 8407 or email him at [email protected].
