Local author and musician urges readers to embrace the present moment

The book grew out of his own life-changing experience, in December 2018, when Mbidana was involved in a car accident while working to market his first music project

Author and musician Sinelizwi Mbidana is urging people to slow down in his debut book.

“For many people, life is a constant race between what has already happened and what they hope will happen next. I’m challenging readers to pause, breathe and appreciate the only moment they truly have, the present,” said Mbidana.

His debut book, The Innocent Present Moment, is a deeply personal reflection on life, healing, spirituality, gratitude and self-discovery.

Drawing on experiences across rural villages, hostels, townships, and Johannesburg suburbs, the author uses his own journey to encourage readers to reconsider their relationship with the past, present, and future.

The book grew out of his own life-changing experience in December 2018, when Mbidana was involved in a car accident while working to market his first music project.

His plans were suddenly interrupted, leaving him recovering in a hospital ward at Far East Rand Hospital.

It was during this period of uncertainty that a fellow patient introduced him to Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now.

The book became an important influence on Mbidana’s thinking and helped him understand the importance of being present rather than becoming consumed by what had happened or what might happen. That experience ultimately became the foundation for The Innocent Present Moment.

Mbidana argues that people often rob themselves of the present by carrying the weight of yesterday or trying to force tomorrow to arrive before its time.

His message is particularly relevant in a society where people are often under pressure to achieve, succeed and constantly prove themselves.

He also examines society’s pursuit of fame, status and material success.

“In a chapter titled ‘The Actual Breakthrough’, I challenge the idea that success is only measured by external achievements, suggesting instead that the greatest breakthrough can come from discovering and understanding oneself,” said Mbidana.

Another important theme is gratitude.

The opening chapter, ‘Magnitude of Gratitude’, explores how gratitude has influenced Mbidana’s life and how appreciating what one has can change one’s perspective. Rather than waiting for everything to be perfect before being thankful, the book encourages readers to recognise the value of the small things already present in their lives. “As a musician, I traditionally expressed my experiences through songs. However, I realised that a song lasting only a few minutes could not contain every lesson, experience and reflection gathered throughout life. Writing therefore gave me the space to explore my journey in greater depth,” explains Mbidana.

At its heart, The Innocent Present Moment is not simply a book about Mbidana’s life; it is an invitation for readers to examine their own lives.

He said its central message is that life should not be placed on hold while people wait for a better future or remain trapped by yesterday. He added that this book will not be his last and that he plans to continue his writing journey.
