E-tolls are too expensive

I am one of the people in Gauteng who are calling for the scrapping of the e-toll system.

I live in Zonkizizwe and work in Bryanston. I travel a daily distance of about 149km to and from my work and home. Whichever route I decide to take from my house to work, I have to go through at least three to four toll gentries, each one with a different tariff cost.

This has a tremendous strain on my mind because I now fear losing my vehicle and finally my job and see my family forsake their acquired privileges. I know that I’m not alone and my friends and I discuss these issues all the time.

Transport costs alone have become astronomical for a family man with an unemployed wife and four schoolgoing young children to feed and clothe. Just keeping my job and feeding my family is in itself already a huge financial burden on my shoulders and for Sanral to add toll fees on us is crippling and merciless.

Already, my e-toll bill stands at R27 900 and as much as I am a law-abiding citizen who pays his taxes and rates, never in my life has I ever owed this large amount of money. Not only that – the question I’m stuck with right now is where the hell am I going to find that kind of money to settle this Sanral debt?

The fact that I have a job and I am healthy enough to go to it daily without fail and that I contribute my side of the deal as stipulated in my job contract and earn a salary every month for doing that does not necessarily mean that I am there for Sanral to screw me.

I fully support the stance taken by those opposing Sanral’s e-tolls.
