Joint gender and family safety march held
On October 24 about 100 male and female law enforcement officers from the EMPD were joined by their counterparts in the SAPS as well as members of the community to support a march against gender-based violence by members of the correctional services.
According to the EMPD spokesperson, Kobedi Mokheseng, the peaceful march started at around 8am and ended just after 2pm and took place in the Kingsway area. It was organised and led by the Modderbee Correctional Services management and the staff members.
“The dual carriageway between the two petrol filling stations and the Modderbee Correctional Services building (prison) came to a virtual standstill as the crowd of marchers carrying banners, posters and flags flocked onto the carriageway. Leading the campaign procession were officers of the SAPS, EMPD, correctional service representatives and members of the community, with other law enforcement agencies, who marched in support against domestic and family violence,” explained.

According to the organisers of the march, the purpose of the demonstration was to highlight the plight of domestic and family violence victims and to send a clear message to potential, as well as serial perpetrators, to refrain from and stop gender-based violence.
“The march went on peacefully and there were no casualties or complaints reported before and after the parade. All participants in the demonstration were well behaved and the demonstration was held in an orderly manner,” Mokheseng explained.
EMPD officers at precinct level and the Social Crime Prevention Unit members placed pointsmen and women on busy intersections to ensure there were no interruptions to the traffic flow.
