In a bid to help girls in their policing precinct, members of the Germiston SAPS and Germiston SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre visited three schools last Tuesday.
The police partnered with local company, Johnson Matthey, which donated sanitary towels for the campaign.
They visited three schools, namely Ekurhuleni Primary in Dukathole, Leeuwpoort Primary in Driehoek and Institute Status Acres in the Germiston CBD.
Sanitary towels were handed out to girls in Grades Six, Seven, Eight and Nine, and Const Maxwell Mabunda, the communications officer for the Germiston SAPS told the GCN that 307 girls received sanitary towels.
Sgt Queen Sibeko, from the Germiston SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, added that the learners were selected by the teachers at the three schools.

“Many young girls cannot afford to buy sanitary towels and when that time of the month comes they resort to using newspapers,” Sibeko said.
“Johnson Matthey also donated sanitary towels to the Germiston SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre.”
Mabunda said that during the visits, the girls were also addressed by Const Reggie Ramokolo, Sibeko and Thobeka Xoko from Johnson Matthey, and issues of safety were discussed.
Safety issues included telling someone where they were going, as well as making sure they do not use their cellphones while walking in the streets.
“The campaign aimed at showing the girl children that we support them all the way,” said Mabunda.
