Peasant Folly Primary School in Palm Ridge Extension Nine recently hosted an award ceremony for Grade Seven learners at the school.
Grade Seven learners from the school were rewarded for their outstanding performances in their learning areas. Others were rewarded for discipline while others received awards for neatness and cleanliness.
Speaking at the ceremony, school principal Busisiwe Kubheka said the purpose of the ceremony was to reward those learners who performed at their utmost best during this academic year.
There are also those who were rewarded for 100 per cent attendance and for best public speaker.
“Our aim is to create healthy competition among learners and to encourage them to continue to work hard. At the same time, we encourage those who did not do well to pull up their socks,” she said.
Sharing her recipe for success, Alicia Ngulube (13), the school’s Dux learner for 2019, said she was very excited about her achievement.
“I study very hard every day. I just want it to be in my system so that I will get used to it. The more I teach myself to get used to it the easier it will be for me to study when it is needed the most [at varsity],” said Ngulube, who said she wants to be a doctor.

She went on to add that her sister, Nicole, is an inspiration to her.
“There is no one I know who is as supportive as her. She always gives me good advice. One thing she always tells me is that I must respect my teachers the same way as I respect my mom, who is a single parent. She also told me not to involve myself in sexual activities at a young age,” she said.
She said she would like to work hard and make sure she does not disappoint her mom, who works as a domestic worker.
“With the very little she has she makes sure that we have all the resources we need to do well at school,” said Alicia.
According to Thandiwe Ngwenya, head of department of senior phase, Alicia is one the most dedicated learners she knows.

“She is a hard worker and very dedicated to her school work. What I like about her is that she is humble and full of respect for her teachers.
“She is the kind of person who does not like to raise her hand when teachers ask questions, but as a teacher you know she is the person to point if you want a perfect answer,” she said.
