ALERT: Motorists advised to drive with caution on roads surrounding Marathon informal settlement

Though Marathon informal settlement residents are no longer blocking roads with portable toilets and burning tyres, the debris remains.

Residents of the Marathon informal settlement took to the streets yesterday (Sunday, December 8) to protest an alleged lack of service delivery from the metro.

Community members blocked the roads surrounding the informal settlement (including Cemetery, Johan Rissik and Main Reef roads) with portable toilets and burning tyres, making it impossible for motorists to use these routes.

This morning (Monday) the protesting residents are nowhere to be seen but the debris remains.

“We urge motorists to drive with caution in the area as there is debris in the roads,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“It is unclear at this stage who will clear the debris or when this will be done.”

Police and members of the EMPD continue to monitor the situation.
