The persistent rainfall has led to flooding in parts of Gauteng.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is on high alert and echoed the South African Weather Services’ (SAWS) flood warning to residents and motorists in Ekurhuleni.
“It has been raining for the past week persistently and roads across the metro are slippery and flooding is imminent,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.
“Motorists are advised to be on high alert while driving.
“Some roads have potholes filled with rainwater making them very difficult to identify.
“Deep and large potholes may and can lead to fatal crashes.

“Keeping a following distance and adhering to speed limits can save lives.
“Drivers should check their vehicle’s tyres, wipers and lights before travelling to prevent accidents from happening.
“By so doing, lives could be saved.”
Communities in low laying areas are advised to be on high alert.
The ground is saturated, and any drizzle experienced, may result in flooding.
The tendency of people to cross streams using an inappropriate route such as water pipes erected across those streams is a dangerous practice which could lead to drowning.
All 29 fir stations’ firefighters and specialised rescue teams are ready to respond to any eventualities related to flooding.
Monitoring and listening to weather reports from different media platforms, could be lifesaving.
