Tip-off leads to shop owner being placed behind bars

The suspect was arrested in Zonkizizwe Zone Four at around 4pm.

A 25-year-old man is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested by the Zonkizizwe SAPS Intelligence Unit on January 28 for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS Sgt Rufus Tema said the Zonkizizwe Intelligence Unit had earlier received an anonymous tip-off about somebody seen in possession of a suspected unlicensed firearm.

“The information received led the police to a spaza shop in Zone Four. Upon searching the owner and inside the shop, police found the 9mm Norico with its serial number filed off.

“The suspect was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic examinations to determine if it has been used in the commission of the crime,” Tema explained.
