Police offer shoots his girlfriend four times over cellphone

The police officer who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend outside the C Class tavern in Vosloorus was granted free bail by the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on February 11.

It is alleged that the victim, Thamsanqa Khoboi (31), was at the tavern in Sotho Section with his police boyfriend stationed at Heidelberg Police station on February 8 at about at 12 noon.

“They had an argument about the cellphone allegedly belonging to the police officer. The suspect demanded his cellphone from the victim, but the victim said she knew nothing about it.

“The boyfriend allegedly requested that the victim give him the SIM card back, but Khoboi said she knew nothing about the SIM card nor the cellphone. The suspect allegedly took out his firearm and shot the victim four times, one bullet to the head and two to the chest and another hit the victim’s hand. Four cartridges were found on the scene. The suspect handed himself over to the Vosloorus SAPS where he was arrested,” according to a statement released by the Vosloorus SAPS.

Xoliswa Mkhwanazi, the cousin of the late Khoboi, told Kathorus MAIL the family was unhappy about the suspect being released from custody.

“It is upsetting. We feel the justice system has failed us. It does not respect the family, as well as Khoboi,” Mkhwanazi told the publication.

Kathorus MAIL contacted Sontaga Seisa from Independent Police Investigating Directorate (Ipid) for comment on the reason the suspect was released from custody.

Seisa released statement which reads:“The Ipid is investigating the case as it was taken to court. But due to insufficient evidence at that stage, the suspect had to be released from custody as this is a procedure if the case was not placed on the court roll. This is done to allow the investigation to be continued to have enough evidence to be presented in court. In this case, our investigator has continued with the collection of evidence and will liaise with the senior public prosecutor with the views of building a strong case before the suspect is taken back to court shortly. Ipid conducts its investigation independently, fairly, impartially and without prejudice. We do not conduct investigation with favouritism irrespective what the suspect’s position is. Once we have gathered enough evidence, Ipid will ensure that the suspect has his day in court to answer the allegations against him. No body is above the law in Ipid’s eyes.”

He added that the identity of the firearm cannot be told to the public to avoid the possibility of jeopardising the case.

After releasing this statement, Seisa released another statement confirming that the suspect has been rearrested and charged with murder case. The second statement reads: “Latest is that Ipid has just arrested the suspect on the murder case and will appear in Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on February 16.”

The suspect appeared in court to get his bail application date.
