Two police officers were attacked and stabbed while transporting a 25-year-old rape accused back to prison from court on Monday afternoon.
The members from the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit were transporting the man to Sun City Prison from the Springs Magistrate’s Court when the incident occurred.
They were on the N3 highway north near Spruitview, between the Leondale off-ramp and the Barry Marais on-ramp.
Col Brenda Muridili, the spokesperson from the National SAPS head office told the GCN that the officers were both stabbed with a sharp object.

“They fought back and the suspect was fatally wounded,” she said.
“The officers were transported to hospital where they are receiving medical treatment.”
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) members responded to the scene and the police officers were transported to hospital by a DEMS ambulance and an ambulance from a private ambulance service.
“The police are busy with an investigation into the incident,” said Muridili.
