Phinda-Mzala did it again

Phinda-Mzala Community Project, a non-profit organisation, hosted Street Show 2020 at the Hlatshwayo Community Sports Grounds, Katlehong, on March 7.

The project, which was supported by the National Arts Council, Skye Distribution and ABI, started with gender-based violence (GBV) parade at 9am from Gamaphotheng Shopping Centre. The GBV parade to Hlatshwayo Sports Grounds was led by a Coca-Cola music truck.

According to David Mahlaba, managing director of the Phinda-Mzala Community Project, the purpose of the event was to expose talent to the community.

“We used the show to address GBV. Ward 51 Clr Jacky Mahoro delivered a speech about this topic.

“Phinda-Mzala, Ubumbano Cultural Group, K1 Production, Masakhane Performing Art Project, Selector B, and Gunther Alexander performed on the day. They performed various styles of dance, such as pantsula, Zulu traditional, sangoma traditional and kofifi, sang and recited poetry,” said Mahlaba.

He said he was happy with the manner in which the community supported the event to make it successful.

“Some resident provided their homes as preparation for food or for the performers to get ready in,” Mahlaba said. They also allowed street vendors to sell their goods to show support to local business people in the township.

As part of addressing unemployment issues, Phinda-Mzala managed to employ performers, security guards, an MC, DJs, caterers, stage setup employees, and they also paid the homeowners. About 135 people from the Katlehong area were employed on the day.

He added that they are looking forward to hosting a workshop in administration. They are inviting different stakeholders willing to assist with arts and culture programmes to come forward.
