Vosloorus SAPS has new head of support
Col Poppy Maleka, the new Vosloorus SAPS head of support, said it was her love for the job and passion for working with the community that saw her join the police force in 2004.
Speaking to Kathorus MAIL, Maleka, who started her new job in January, said keeping the community safe from ever-increasing crime is the reason she joined the police force.
She added that she did not want to be just a police officer, she wanted to study hard and go a long way in the department.
“After completing my matric in 1997, I studied social work at the North-West University (NWU), majoring in psychology. After NWU, I studied forensic investigation at the University of Cape Town. These qualifications helped me a lot because when I started my police job in 2004, I did not start at a grassroots level,” she said.
Maleka said she started in Germiston in 2004 in the Family Violence Child and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS) until 2006.
“I then went to Brakpan detectives in 2007, where I was promoted to inspector. Immediately after being promoted, I was lucky to be promoted to captain,” said Maleka, adding that she was still at FCS when she was promoted to captain until 2010 when their unit was moved to Tsakane.

She said in 2011 she was promoted to the provincial office, where she served as a provincial commander until 2015.
“While in the police force, I studied FCS, detective courses and detective commander’s courses because I wanted to explore every department inside the police force.
“I decided to join the support department because of the HR course I am doing,” said Maleka, adding she wants to know everything that is happening inside the police force.
Other than being a hard worker, Maleka said she keeps herself fit and healthy by being active in netball and the gym four to five days a week, as well as partaking in 10km and 15km runs.
“I also like spending time with my two daughters (24 and 13) and son (10),” she said.
Maleka said her team consists of only hard workers who respond very well to her new strategies.
“I haven’t had any problems since I started working with them.”
Maleka said her responsibility is to ensure the components under her command – human resources, finance, admin and supply chain – are reaching their targets when it comes to performance and ensuring the station is well maintained.
She added that her job does not involve working closely with the community, but they partly contribute to the prevention of crime by taking part in operations such as O Kae Molao and other operations.
She plans to ensure that Vispol is well equipped with the resources for crime prevention.
Maleke said she is also planning to be more involved in community educational talks and talks at the schools.
