Katlehong taxis on strike
A taxi strike by members affiliated to the Katlehong People’s Taxi Association (Kapta) has brought commuters to their knees.
Commuters claim the strike started in the early hours of this morning April 1), leaving many of them stranded at taxi ranks and along many of the routes leading out and into Katlehong.
Several taxi operators approached by Kathorus MAIL for comment refused to comment and instead directed the newspaper to the association’s central office in Dinwiddie, Germiston.
“We are merely following instructions from head office to stop operations. We are not allowed to say anything more than that,” one of the operators at the Katlehong/Germiston rank outside the Katlehong Stadium. Meanwhile, scores of workers, many of them essential service providers at food markets in the Germiston area, stood idle waiting for transport to hitch a ride to work.

Aubrey Motsamai, a supervisor at a leading food store in the Germiston CBD, said he was frustrated by the unavailability of the taxis.
“Sadly, I cannot do anything about it. As you can see there are no other vehicles moving in the streets,” said Motsamai.
Daphne Malunga, a cashier at the same food store, reiterated what was said by her colleague.
“There’s about six of us and we usually meet at this taxi rank to catch our transport to work. But today we’ve been waiting here since 7am this morning,” she said.
Efforts to contact Kapta proved futile as their telephones rang unanswered.
This is a developing story, Kathorus MAIL will keep readers updated.
