Germiston High School’s Grade 12 learner Fumani Baloyi recently received the prestigious white blazer from his school.
The white blazer is only bestowed upon learners who have achieved full colours in at least three of the four spheres of the school being academics, culture, sport and service.
Despite the global pandemic and challenges of lockdown, Fumani also won a national poetry competition while under lockdown.
He received his white blazer for his phenomenal achievements in academics, two years of service to the school on the trophy team, his half colours for the Mathematics Olympiad, and his full colours in culture.
His crowning achievement, one of his many poems, will be is published by Kreatio and the Group 7 Publishers in July 2020.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that he participated and wrote all of his poems in Afrikaans.
“I started writing as it was a way to creatively voice my thoughts. Growing up, I’ve always had a desire to write, but unwillingly stalled the wish,” wrote Fumani.
“Ultimately, in the maturation of time, I found the zeal to write again. I would like to express my eternal gratitude to my Afrikaans teachers for this. They reignited my forlorn desire to know the Afrikaans language and encouraged me to write through their God-sent abilities.
“My hope is that the message of my writing is able to stretch as far as it can to ensure that people are empowered by it.”
White blazer recipients
Under the leadership of Lilleike, Kevin Glass received his white blazer in 2000 after receiving full colours in academics, drama and swimming.
Seventeen years later in April 2017, Diandra du Preez received her white blazer for her full colours in rowing, athletics, academics, and for winning the ATKV’s national Spellathon in 2015.
Two years later, the white blazer was conferred on Ntuthuko Hlatshwayo by current principal R Goosen.
Ntuthuko received full colours for her multiple outstanding performances at the Eisteddfod, for her success in academics, and her two years of service to the school as a sound technician.
