The Germiston Stadium’s renovations are back on track after they were put on hold due to lockdown.
The stadium was closed since November 2019 for renovations and it was planned that it would re-open for public use in August.
The renovations were expected to be complete by July 31, but due to lockdown all that changed.
“The pandemic had a negative impact on many things. The Germiston Stadium renovation project was not spared. We had a minor impact on the resurfacing of the Germiston Tartar Track,” said Germiston Local Sport Confederation (GLSC) chairperson John Diamond.
“We are happy that we are now back on track. Completion was scheduled for the end of September but we can expect the finishing now in mid-December 2020.

“Germiston Stadium was and will still be known for track and field records and recreational games. This flagship stadium is also the home for the OR Thambo Socini Games that was normally hosted in October. The age group 14 and 15 hosted the Italian counterparts which promotes socio cohesion among the youth,” said Diamond.
The track has not been resurfaced in 15 years and the wear and tear was beginning to show which was one of the reasons that prompted the renovations.
Diamond said a renovated stadium will mean a lot to athletes.
“Having proper facilities is a big positive. When your area of training is well maintained it also inspires you to push and do better,” said Diamond.
He said a renovated stadium will mark a new journey for the GLSC.
“We cannot wait for the stadium to be officially open for use,” said Diamond.
