Arts and crafts to take lockdown blues away at Sunnyridge Primary

Arts and crafts brightened up learners’ days at Sunnyridge Primary School recently.
Learners showcased expressions of their creativity such as paintings, drawings and box creatures.
An art exhibition was held and the art was used to decorate the school hall.
Elsa Vink, a teacher at the school, said they became aware of a number of learners who were experiencing emotional difficulties due to Covid-19 and lockdown.
“Doing art activities became an ideal way of helping them to relieve boredom and to express their emotions and experiences. It helped them realise they were not alone,” said Elsa.

She added the art exhibition was held to give recognition to talented learners for their effort and positive attitude towards the project.
Marianna Odendaal, the principal of the school, spoke about the effects lockdown had.
She said the lockdown was an unexpected indefinite which was not on their normal school timetable.
“However, teachers did not allow the new normal to cast any shadow on their innovative teaching styles.”
The old schooling system was replaced with WhatsApp video lessons, igniting a keenness among learners to produce spectacular art pieces with the positive inspiration of their distant teachers.
The school was also affected financially during lockdown.
“Due to poor school fee payments, Sunnyridge, unfortunately, does not have any online facilities.
“The work by Vink and ongoing encouragement, with other enthusiastic teachers, motivated everyone, resulting in the most incredible work received from the Grade Four and Five learners.
“As the school principal, I am exceptionally proud to serve such a dynamic team of educators who thrive with challenges.
“They used their own data to make the impossible happen and they simply continue delivering with the life skills curriculum.
“This will leave a colourful memory with all our learners to share with their children one day.
“Thank you Sunnyridge educators,” said Odendaal.
