One of eight suspects caught for business robbery

The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen goods, business robbery and attempted murder.

A 28-year-old suspect was arrested for robbery at the Pep store in Primrose on October 7.

The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen goods, business robbery and attempted murder.

“It is alleged that eight suspects, of which six were armed, entered the store on Rietfontein Road and threatened the tellers at gunpoint,” said Primrose SAPS spokesperson Sgt Style Maome.

“They took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash registers and cellphones from the stands. They put the cellphones in a big bag and loaded the bag into the boot of a blue Toyota, which was waiting outside the shop.”

According to Maome, a bystander witnessed the robbery and alerted a passing police vehicle.

“When the police stopped at the store, one of the suspects started shooting in the direction of the police, damaging the passenger side window of the state vehicle.

“The police returned fire and the suspects jumped into a second vehicle, a white Quantum, that was parked nearby and sped off,” said Maome.

He said the suspects in both vehicles drove past the Pimrose Police Station. A member of the provincial task team, who was at the station at the time, then followed the blue Toyota which was driving towards Johannesburg.

“The chase was joined by members of EMPD and tactical response security.

“Near Stuart Park at the corner of Mullins and Home roads, more shots were fired and the car carrying the loot came to a standstill.

“The driver was arrested. Only the bag containing cellphones was recovered. The suspect was detained at Primrose Police Station. He will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon while a manhunt for other suspects continues,” said Maome.
