Dance culture to bring change
A township theatre production featuring a group of young actors from Duduza, east of Kathorus, aims to highlight the plight of young people caught up in social ills.
According to the production coordinator, David ‘Daizer’ Mahlaba, the streets of South African townships have become home to many youngsters who are imprisoned by prostitution, drugs, crime and homelessness.
“From a young age these children bury themselves in this life, others as a way to escape while others are victims of peer pressure,” explained Mahlaba.
He told Kathorus MAIL he was disturbed by what he kept seeing in the townships and decided to use theatre to change the situation.
Pantsula, Music and Gumboot was established in Katlehong in November 2011 to create a platform for young people to highlight their artistic and acting talents.
The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and Arts Unite is planning to widen and extend the arts and theatre platform around Ekurhuleni.
“We invite performing arts students, music producers, script writers, digital marketers to partnership with us and help create a wider family of people in the arts,” said Mahlaba.
