A family is in need after a fire broke out at Artrene Court in Primrose.
The blaze engulfed the Ngwenya family’s bachelor flat after the fire started at about 6.30am on Thursday.
“My wife had gone out to fetch water, at a tap behind the flat. I was also not at home,” said the father, Pakamisa Ngwenya.
The flat accommodated three people – Jacqueline, Phakamisa and their five-year-old grandchild.
Pakamisa added when he arrived he could not get into the flat.
“The fire had spread rapidly.”
Jacqueline was still crying and too emotional to talk when GCN was on the scene.
Their daughter, Zinhle Ngwenya, said the grandson was in the flat watching cartoons when the fire broke out.
“He ran out to call for help. I stay a few streets away from my parents and I could see the fire from where I was. It was terrible,” said Zinhle.
She added when firefighters arrived at about 7am, they struggled to put out the fire at first.
