City’s bursary recipient Mpumi excels

Mpumi Mbobo, one of the nine Ekurhuleni bursary recipients, was honoured by the City of Ekurhuleni.

Mpumi Mbobo, one of the nine Ekurhuleni bursary recipients, was honoured by the City of Ekurhuleni at the GM Pitje Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony on March 10.

While sharing a few words of encouragement with the youth who aspire to be recipients of the city’s academic excellence, Mbobo said they must trust the process and always give it their all no matter what their immediate circumstances are.

“I finished matric when I was 17 years old with distinctions that guaranteed me a place in university, but I only furthered my studies 13 years later because at the time of finishing school I did not have funds for tertiary education,” Mbobo said.

Mbobo, who was a mother of two when she was 19 years old, could have given up and thought all odds were against her, but she kept her dreams alive. “Black child, your dreams are valid,” this was the mantra that kept the Breda University graduate going.

While she was in Netherlands she completed two degrees simultaneously: BSc Logistics Management and BSc Logistics Engineering, with a focus in aviation. “Mbobo beamed with pride, while looking at the certificate.”

She recalled how she was not deterred by being a teenage mom but remained hopeful that something as great as this will materialise. “The city’s rising star, along with eight other bursary recipients, flew the Ekurhuleni flag high at Breda University in Netherlands.

“She plans on working even harder to obtain a master’s in the same field, and one day lecture undergraduates in the envisaged Ekurhuleni University of Science and Technology,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
