Germiston Callies help marshal CGA Provincial Championships
Victor Mhlakaza, the chairperson of Germiston Callies Athletics Club, shared more on how the marathons went for the club.
Germiston runners had an early and busy weekend at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) 2021 Half Marathon and 10km Provincial Championships on April 11, 2021, at the Germiston Stadium.
Victor Mhlakaza, the chairperson of Germiston Callies Athletics Club, shared more on how the marathons went for the club. Mhlakaza said the Callies only had one participating runner Kabelo Maroga who ran the 21km with a time of 1:22:39. Maroga who is also a Germiston High School learner said it was a lovely race even though it was challenging.
“Maintaining the pace for 21km was tough but I was happy to finish the race.” Maroga thanked his coach, Thulani Sibeko. Mhlakaza added the Germiston Callies received a lot of compliments from both the runners and organisers (CGA) on the way they felt secure while running.
“Runners were happy to be running in an official race during in these difficult times of Covid-19.” Mhlakaza said they had no challenges. “We are used to organising races ourselves so we pulled through.”
As the coordinator of marshals, Mhlakaza said his highlight was the positive response he got from the athletics club members and fellow runners when he approached within a short space of time.

“They came on board and we delivered. “We worked well with CGA and the EMPD, which helped with how smoothly everything ran on the day.” Mhlakaza thanked CGA for allowing them to be part of the race. “This was one of the initiatives of giving back to the community.”
As marshals, Mhlakaza also thanked the runners for complying with their guidance. “This made our job to safeguard runners much easier. “I also want to thank our members and non-members for the commitment they showed on agreeing to help when asked within a short notice.”
As the world is still faced with this pandemic, Mhlakaza said there are not many races going on.
“We will continue to keep fit and train and run virtual races, which is the only thing happening at the moment.”
