Care centre celebrates Nurses’ Day through awareness campaign
Nurses from Bertha Gxowa Care Centre celebrated the day by doing what they did best, to serve and care for people.

May 12 marked International Nurses’ Day, which celebrated the birthday of Florence Nightingale. This year’s theme was A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare.
This year, the profession sought to show how nursing would look into the future as well as how it would transform the next stage of healthcare. Nurses from Bertha Gxowa Care Centre celebrated the day by doing what they did best, to serve and care for people.

The team from the care centre dressed in all white and took to the streets to condemn the scourge of GBV and educate people about it. The walk kicked off from the hospital and ended at the Germiston Taxi Rank.
“Today is about educating people about GBV and also informing them about the services we offer as a care unit. “We are celebrating Nurses’ Day by doing what we love, which is looking after the wellbeing of the community,” said Sr Hazel Moagi, manager of the care centre.
The nurses were joined by Germiston SAPS members.
“As the police, we work closely with the care centre as they play a vital role in GBV cases and rape cases. They collect evidence and we take the evidence and use it as part of our investigation,” said Germiston police spokesperson Const Maxwell Mabunda.
They were also joined by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Shout-It-Now. Different stakeholders were there to spread awareness to commuters and empower them with information.
Shout-It-Now also did HIV tests and shared information on GBV and preventative methods.
“As Shout-It-Now, we offer onsite PrEP initiation to at-risk adolescent girls and young women and a series of behavioural intervention programmes through our partners, CMT, to stop the spread of HIV. We do the tests onsite as our hi-tech, mobile bus equips us to,” said Londiwe Sibiya from Shout-It-Now.
The cooperative governance and traditional affairs department was also present to talk about and register the elderly for the Covid-19 vaccination programme.
