EWC helps fight poverty

The donations made to the school were aimed at helping some learners who came to school wearing worn-out shoes and uniforms.

Ekurhuleni West Tvet College recently donated packages to learners in Winnie Mandela High School, in Thembisa, which is a quintile 1 school.

The high school received 500 school bags, 500 pencil cases and 500 rulers. The college also donated 130 pairs of shoes, 85 blankets, as well as 2 400 masks.

The donations made to the school were aimed at helping some learners who came to school wearing worn-out shoes and uniforms and who carried their books in torn bags or plastics.

“Social protection remains important in reducing extreme poverty, given the challenges that the country is facing,” said Ekurhuleni West Tvet College acting principal Peter Mudau.

He added that if South Africans can live by the principle of ‘vhuthu’, ‘botho’, ‘vumunu’, ‘ubuntu’, they can be able to alleviate poverty and social ills, as well as dispelling inequalities in communities.

Advocate Chris Setlhako, chairperson of the college council, commended EWC for an initiative that does not only touch the lives of the learners but also helps in the prevention and spread of Covid-19.

“This initiative shows that the college does not only look at its own interest but at the interests of the community it is serving as well,” said Setlhako.

Nonceba Ntuta, director for the Gauteng Department of Basic Education Ekurhuleni North district, extended gratitude to the college on behalf of GDBE as she welcomed the donation given to the school.

Kgodisho Mokgapa, a learner representative, encouraged the college to continue lending a helping hand to the needy. Department of Higher Education and Training regional manager Hellen Ntlatleng also attended the event.
