Suspects arrested after shootout with police

Brackendows SAPS arrested two suspects for attempted murder and possession of house break-in implements on July 21.

Around 21:08 officers from SAPS in the area of Alrode South spotted a suspicious-looking Mazda 5 and attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle sped off and the officers gave chase. The suspects started shooting at the police and the officers returned fire.

SAPS chased the vehicle into the Mavimbela section of Katlehong, where the suspects abandoned the car.

Upon searching the area where they abandoned the vehicle, the officers spotted a suspect trying to jump a fence and cornered and arrested him.

A second suspect came out from his hiding place and was arrested.

In the vehicle, police found a toy gun, balaclavas and gloves. The vehicle had two bulletholes in the boot and a round had penetrated the passenger seat. A spent cartridge was found in the car.

“The first suspect, a 40-year-old male, had a gunshot wound on the left leg and the second suspect, also a 40-year-old male, had a gunshot wound on the left ankle,” said WO Gerhard Cornelius, spokesperson for Brackendowns SAPS.

“Both were transported by ambulance to the hospital and were charged for possession of house break-in implements and attempted murder.”
