Katlehong youth NPO to petition parliament
Gama said once established, the rehab centres would provide recovering addicts and alcoholics with the best treatment under qualified and trained staff.
The rampant drug and alcohol problem among young people around Kathorus has prompted a Katlehong-based youth NPO to petition Parliament to demand that lawmakers prioritise a budget towards the establishment of drugs and alcohol rehabilitation centres in the townships and rural areas.
Moses Gama, the founder of Tsohang Youth Project, told Kathorus MAIL the solicited funds would help establish drug and alcohol rehabilitation and treatment facilities in towns and townships where the problem looms large so that addicts could be treated close to their homes and families.
Gama added this would reduce the growth of the nationwide drug and alcohol abuse scourge which, he said, destroys the future of the country’s youth.
He described the Tsohang Youth Project NPO as taking a stance against the growing abuse of drugs and alcohol among young people in the townships. Gama explained the NPO continues to pride itself on having rescued hundreds of young rehabilitated addicts and former alcoholics whose lives have been salvaged.
Overwhelmed by the growing number of young people who are hooked on drugs and alcohol abuse in the townships of Kathorus, Gama explained the Tsohang Youth Project NPO is appealing to Parliament to compel the country’s law-makers to establish funds that would help alleviate the drug abuse and alcohol addiction for all affected sectors of our society.
“Drugs and alcohol don’t only affect young people, so these facilities would cater for all people who may knock on its doors in search of help with addiction,” he said.
Gama is confident that the intervention of the government in creating rehabs for drug and alcohol addiction among the youth is likely to yield positive results for the future of many young people. He added that Tsohang Youth Project believes by establishing these rehab hubs and addiction centres in the townships and rural areas, the authorities would be confirming their commitment to finally deal with the social ill effectively.
He explained the treatment will help many youngsters refocus their mindset to ensure a sober and healthier youth and society.

In their quest to fight societal ills in communities, Gama said the NPO is inviting other youth development organisations around Ekurhuleni to support the NPO’s call for the petition to Parliament.
Many recovering addicts, Gama explained, have acquired recreational skills and artistic talents provided by the organisation and its affiliates.
Gama told Kathorus MAIL during his youth he joined several youth organisations, many of which were, according to him, sponsored by the old Germiston City Council municipality.
He said he did not agree with some of the restrictions imposed by the municipality on its premises, so he decided to establish a township-based NPO. Today the NPO has become a beacon of hope for many parents.
“Tsohang Youth Project NPO has rescued and changed the lives of many young former drug addicts, as well as adult alcoholics who had given up on recovery.”
Gama said once established, the rehab centres would provide recovering addicts and alcoholics with the best treatment under qualified and trained staff.
