“I understand that the focus of this training programme is mainly women, especially the youth,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
“In these modern times, ICT skills are an essential requirement for the majority of job roles. Having ICT skills will help to organise your workload, streamline processes and access digital information,” she said.
“The rapid development of modern ICT over the past few years has seen many career paths become obsolete in secretarial, booking and financial services. But at the same time, many new jobs using and developing new ICT-based applications are being created,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
“It is for this reason that my department took an initiative to upskill young people across the province and equip them with skills that cater for these new opportunities, building an astuteness to rapidly appropriate the new world of ICT.
“We will also open the Centre of Excellence where we will be providing ICT upskilling initiatives and SMME development.”
Xhakaza said they aim to reach out to poorer communities and rural areas where is it impossible to access transport.
“Women and girls in some of our townships and rural areas further face persistent structural constraints, including their higher probability to be out of school than boys and their likelihood is twice as high as girls in urban areas.
“We need to intervene and correct this inequality and ensure that all women can access this same programme. They must also be equipped with more advanced digital skills to enable them to participate equally in ICT-related industries.
“We all know Germiston is the hub of Gauteng’s economy and these initiatives will spearhead the essence of service delivery in our province and a place of collaboration to pursue excellence and drive the true meaning of e-governance through research and skills development.”
