As sport starts to slowly get back to play, the Germiston City Basketball Club is happy to have reopened and is eager to start the season.

“The unpredictability of the lockdown restrictions made it difficult for us to plan. We prevailed and are happy and proud that it paid off, as our players have achieved Team Ekurhuleni District colours for the OR Tambo Soncini Games,” said Seaparo Ramaube from the club.

Players who achieved their colours were:
• U-14: Ofentse Mogapi, Munashe Mberikunashe, Bokamoso Ramaube, Promise Mukendi and Solomon Mrubi
• U-16: Sphamandla Mavuso, Likhona Khumalo and Ofentse Mogapi
• Gauteng schools teams were Akwande Mthembu and Lesley Chinyahara

Ofentse excelled even further and qualified to play for the Gauteng Provincial Team and will be competing in the National School Sports Championships in March.

The club also hosted an awards ceremony where all the players were presented with awards as a token of the club’s appreciation for all their hard work.

“It has been a difficult two years for the players. They had to be disciplined and keep fit on their own. That takes a lot from players especially when training sessions are done as a team,” said Seaparo.

He said going forward, the club will focus on rebuilding and he invited residents of Germiston to consider taking up basketball.

Provincial trials at Wits University features Ofentse Mogapi, Akwande Mthembu and Seaparo Ramaube.

“We take children off the streets, away from the TV and keep them physically active in a safe environment. We urge parents to encourage their children to come to visit us.

“We have six players from Germiston who have received full scholarships to study any field of their choosing, at any university of their choice through basketball. Basketball is not only about the basketball court but also about off the court as it supports education,” said Seaparo.

The club takes players from the age of 10, both boys and girls.
