Youth turn passion into a business
Ghetto bakery currently has fifteen employees and they hope to grow and employ more people to combat the high unemployment rate.
With the unemployment rate in SA sitting at 43.2%, of which 46.3% of the youth are unemployed, more people are becoming entrepreneurs.
Ghetto Bakery is one such entrepreneurial venture. The business is run by owner Mpho Moloi along with Nosiviwe Botha (supervisor), Teboho Mokeretla (team leader) and Charlie Phohleli.
Ghetto bakery is based at 545 Hattingh Drive, Vosloorus, where they run their day to day operations.
Like any other black-owned business sourcing funds to start the bakery was a hustle, but the group managed to use their savings.
Moloi said they identified a gap for bakery services in the community.
He said they are driven by passion more than anything.
They currently sell pies and scones at designated drop off points including East Rand Mall, Palm Ridge, Naledi Mall, Daveyton, Wattville, along with Bree, MTN, Chris Hani and Somhlowa taxi ranks.
Ghetto Bakery currently employs 15 people, but they are hoping to expand to address the high unemployment rate.
Moloi said they wish to grow into confectionery with branches around Gauteng.

“We want to make it easy for people who host events and functions to make use of our services,” said Moloi.
Botha said her life has changed since they started the business as she is able to make ends meet.
Botha used to own her business selling brayed chicken feet, she explained that it was difficult to survive as there was no market.
Phohleli said he became part of the bakery because of his passion for baking. He obtained an NQF 3 in food, wine and beverage at Phakamani College.
