Pull Together Senior Citizen Club host first lunch after lockdown

“Today was like a Christmas party for us. We have been isolated for too long because of the coronavirus, we did not see each other since 2020.”

Pull Together Senior Citizen Club (PTSCC) members dressed up and gathered for lunch for the first time since the pandemic started at Akas Kitchen in Spruitview on March 22.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate life and remember members of the club who died during the pandemic.

At least 50 PTSCC members attended the event and were entertained with old school classic music as they sang, danced and shared lunch.

According to the secretary, Elizabeth Mathiane, the organisation was established around 2004 and was revived in 2008 under new leadership.

“Today was like a Christmas party for us. We have been isolated for too long because of the coronavirus. We haven’t seen each other since 2020,” said Mathiane.

She said they decided to go out now that the risk is lower.

“This was just a celebration to welcome each other back and thank God because many of our members died, but we are still alive. So, this is to thank God and ask that he protects us going forward,” she said.

Member Deli Mokhari (59) said they were happy to see each other but still had to be cautious.

“It was good for us to see each other after two long years, especially because we are senior citizens. We have little to do and miss each other,” she continued.

“At home, we sit alone staring at the walls. You wish to talk to your peers but do not have airtime to call them. Still, we are not used to communicating over the phone and prefer face-to-face interaction,” said Mokhari.

Another member, Julia Mafa (70), shared the same sentiments, adding she was happy that they could meet again.
She said the event will revive the spirit they once had as they will meet for their social activities.
