The club has been a firm-standing sports club in the Elsburg community for more than 60 years, having opened its doors in 1955.

The club is located in Mare Street and has always aimed to hone and nurture young wrestling talent despite the challenges it faces.

Like many sports clubs, they were affected by the Covid pandemic.

“Keeping the club running is a team effort. We spend from our pocket to cover some of the shortfalls.

“The club has been a beacon of hope for years in the community keeping children off the streets. We want to keep our doors open,” said coach Tobie Alberts.

He said they are a disadvantaged club because some members can’t even afford to pay the fees or purchase club uniforms or proper gear.

“We have children who are talented but don’t have the financial support. We need sponsorship to ensure that these children can reach their full potential,” said Alberts.

The club has 20 members.

He said registration to participate in the competition for the year cost R790 and R250 registration per tournament.

“The gear, which includes boots and a jumpsuit, could cost up to R3 000. From October 6 to 8 the team needs to go to Cape Town for competition and the club does not have money to cover the costs.

“We need to pay for accommodation, transport, meals, gear and competition registration cost.

“These students have been doing well in competitions and proved themselves that they can compete even on higher levels but they need support,” said Alberts.
