Elsburg Wrestling Club participated in the national championships for over-15s on July 9, taking home eight medals.

Head coach Derick Brewis said he was proud of the wrestlers and the coaching team.

Medalists included Igeu Kabesa who took gold in senior freestyle, gold in senior grego and gold masters and Lilian Mbena took the gold in the women’s senior and women U20 categories.

Other wrestlers who won medals include Byron Smit (silver and bronze) in U17s different categories and Timothy Nortman took bronze, also in the U17 age group.

“Our squad boasted three wrestlers that have not competed at this level. We are proud of them,” said Brewis.

The club needs support for the wrestlers to be able to participate in upcoming competitions.

“The nationals will be held in October in Cape Town and the club needs financial support,” said Brewis.

“On July 30 the club will host a fundraising event. Each wrestler needs at least R4 000 for transport, accommodation and food for five days.”
